wine country is fine country, but what about 2-buck Chuck?

wine country is fine country, but what about 2-buck Chuck?

by jturkin on January 10, 2011

2 hours and 20 minutes into a 2 hour late, 4 hour flight, I couldn’t help but stretch my legs and consider, had we left on time, we would’ve touched down by now.

I just watched Sideways, the 2004 Alexander Payne film about wine country. The two most enjoyable parts of that film are the price of the gas (a measly $1.71. Ridiculous! It’s hard to remember the last time it was under $3… but then again, this film was shot about 8 years ago) and a scene between the two main characters, Miles and Jack. Miles (Paul Giamatti) was just informed his book was rejected, and his agent is giving up on him. He drinks the discarded wine out of dump bucket at a winery and runs off. He’s too insignificant to kill himself, and lists a handful of well-known authors who took their own lives. I immediately thought of John Kennedy Toole, and of course the next line out of Jack’s (Thomas Haden Church) mouth is, “what about the Confederacy of Dunces guy.” Me feeled smrt.

Maybe I’m too young or classless too appreciate a film about wine and its subtelties, but I wasn’t all that engaged.

Speaking of engaged (worst transition ever, I’m aware of this, yes), Church’s character is taking this trip with his best friend as a last getaway before marriage… and I just got engaged. Maybe I should get into wine if I’m going to be a married man.

But I’m just fine with Trader Joe’s two-buck Chuck.
