a screenwriter’s resolutions – Jeremy Turkin

Flash Foward: the events of 2011

by jturkin on January 1, 2011

To follow the fashion of New Year’s Resolutions, I too will set self-imposed standards for the fresh calendar year.

I find resolutions to be un-enforceable (I’m sure it’s a word somewhere), and have settled on 10 events that will occur in 2011. The only requirement: they all must be measureable and tangible in some way – so it is clear when the task has been completed (i.e., I cannot say, “be a happier me,” or “workout more.” How can I be sure when these are accomplished).

1-5, I will complete 5 screenplays.

I will work on 2 features I’ve started, 1 which I’ve mapped out but have yet to write out a scene for, and 2 TV spec scripts.

6, Get Represented.

This will result from the sufficient completion of events 1 through 5.

7. Shoot Bigfoot

I know, this seems impossible, but he is out there, and I will gun him down.
Hold your Hendersons. I’m referring to a web series I wrote, Uncharted, about 3 friends who encounter a Bigfoot-esque creature on a camping trip.
This may prove to be the most difficult, as it is a 42 page shoot that will require a lot of costume design and special effects. A challenge? Yes. Impossible? No.

8. Read a book

What? Just one? Yes. It’s a long year, and I imagine over the next 365 days I’ll be able to go cover-to-cover at least once. And seeing how reading begets more reading, I believe getting through one printed work will sling-shot me with enough momentum towards reading more.

9. Fulfill my Birth Rite

This is my last year eligible to experience Israel for free, and I will take advantage of it. I will be finishing my application as soon as registration reopens. Soon, I will know when I’ll be heading to the holy land.

10. Live with my Fiancee

We got engaged in October, and come July or August, I will finally get to live with my special-lady-friend. She’ll be fleeing the coup, and going West, young man. This is my favorite of all the events that I will make happen this year. It only took 3 years to get us back in the same city, permanently, and that was the easy part… surviving the next 3 is the real challenge.
